About South Fork, Colorado

South Fork, Colorado is one of the state's up and coming towns, though the area's roots can be traced back to the 1880s as a community servicing lumbering and mining. Today, the town is the center of a fast-growing tourist and recreation area. For fishermen, there are 47 tributaries and 500 miles of fishing streams between South Fork and the headwaters of the Rio Grande River. There also are 13 lakes within a 20-minutes drive. Five ski resorts are located within driving range.

The town of some 800 permanent residents is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 160 and State Highway 149, at an elevation of 8,480 feet. The headwaters of the Rio Grande River rise just to the west in the Weminuche Wilderness area. South Fork is one of the gateways to the nearly two-million-acre Rio Grande National Forest, the half-a-million-acre Weminuche Wilderness and Colorado's historic Silver Thread Scenic Byway.  Wolf Creek Ski Resort and Village is a planned project now under way just 18 miles to the west.  This will be a billion dollar private resort making South Fork the closest town for investment opportunities.

Unlike its rough-and-tumble neighbors to the north, Lake City, Creede and South Fork redeveloped gradually over the years into a lumber and tourist center. Prior to the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in 1882, the town was a stopping point on the stage line to Wagon Wheel Gap, Creede and Lake City.
